Medication and Drug Safety Education
Apex Pharmacology Institute (API) provides medication and drug safety education to help healthcare organizations promote the safe, effective, and responsible use of medications across the continuum of care. Programs can be incorporated into continuing education and clinical updates or developed as stand-alone training for onboarding new employees and periodically refreshing the knowledge of existing staff, particularly personnel whose responsibilities involve prescribing, dispensing, preparing, administering, monitoring, handling, or counseling patients about medications.
Training may address medication-error prevention, high-alert medications, safe medication administration, adverse drug reactions, drug interactions, contraindications and precautions, medication reconciliation, look-alike/sound-alike drugs, controlled substances, safe medication handling and storage, patient counseling, medication adherence, pharmacovigilance, and recognition and reporting of medication-related problems. Content can be tailored to the responsibilities and scope of practice of physicians, pharmacists, nurses, advanced practice providers, pharmacy technicians, and other healthcare personnel who interact with medications or patients receiving drug therapy.
API works with healthcare organizations to develop training that reflects their practice environment, workforce responsibilities, patient population, and identified medication-safety needs. Education may incorporate clinical scenarios, case discussions, competency assessments, and practical medication-safety exercises and can be delivered on-site, virtually, live, recorded/on-demand, or as part of an organization’s structured onboarding and professional development program.
