Pharmacology of Drugs of Abuse and Addiction
Pharmacology of Drugs of Abuse and Addiction examines how psychoactive substances interact with the brain and body to produce reinforcement, intoxication, tolerance, dependence, withdrawal, and substance use disorders. At Apex Pharmacology Institute (API), we connect fundamental neuropharmacology with the behavioral and clinical dimensions of substance use, exploring reward circuitry, dopamine and other neurotransmitter systems, receptor signaling, neuroadaptation, tolerance, sensitization, physical dependence, craving, withdrawal, and the neurobiology of addiction. Our coverage includes the pharmacology of major substance classes such as opioids, stimulants, alcohol, sedative-hypnotics, cannabis and cannabinoids, nicotine, hallucinogens, dissociative agents, inhalants, and emerging or novel psychoactive substances, with attention to their mechanisms of action, pharmacokinetics, acute and chronic effects, toxicity, and patterns of misuse.
Our training extends from understanding abused substances to understanding the pharmacological treatment of addiction and its complications. Learners explore medications for opioid, alcohol, and tobacco/nicotine use disorders; management of intoxication, overdose, and withdrawal; overdose-reversal strategies; medication interactions; harm-reduction principles; and the scientific basis for evidence-based treatment of substance use disorders. Clinical cases and mechanistic discussions are used to distinguish concepts that are frequently misunderstood —including tolerance, physical dependence, misuse, and addiction —while examining how biological, pharmacological, behavioral, and environmental factors can influence drug-taking behavior and treatment outcomes.
This area is relevant to medical, pharmacy, nursing and other health professions education; graduate and biomedical science programs; addiction medicine and behavioral health professionals; researchers; and organizations involved in substance-use prevention, treatment, and education. API can tailor instruction from foundational drugs-of-abuse pharmacology to advanced topics in addiction neurobiology, overdose and toxicology, medication-assisted treatment, emerging synthetic drugs, polysubstance use, drug-testing principles, translational addiction research, and development of new pharmacotherapies for substance use disorders. Our objective is to bring scientific rigor to a complex and rapidly evolving field — equipping learners to understand what these substances do, why repeated exposure can reshape behavior and physiology, and how pharmacological knowledge can contribute to prevention, safer care, and effective treatment.
