General Pharmacology
General Pharmacology provides the foundational principles for understanding how drugs interact with living systems and how these interactions produce therapeutic and adverse effects. It encompasses the core concepts that apply across virtually all drug classes, including drug–receptor interactions, mechanisms of drug action, dose–response relationships, agonism and antagonism, pharmacodynamics, pharmacokinetics, absorption, distribution, metabolism and excretion (ADME), bioavailability, therapeutic index, drug interactions, adverse drug reactions, tolerance, dependence, and variability in drug response. These principles provide the scientific framework upon which systems pharmacology, clinical pharmacology, pharmacotherapy, toxicology, pharmacogenomics, and drug development are built.
General pharmacology is particularly relevant during the foundational stages of health professions and biomedical science education, providing learners with the conceptual tools needed to understand individual drug classes and apply pharmacological principles to clinical situations. At Apex Pharmacology Institute (API), we deliver general pharmacology education for medical, pharmacy, nursing, dental, optometry, physician associate and other health professions programs, as well as undergraduate, graduate, and biomedical science learners. Our approach emphasizes conceptual understanding rather than isolated memorization, using clinically relevant examples, case applications, quantitative exercises, and active-learning strategies to connect fundamental pharmacological principles with rational drug selection, safe medication use, therapeutic decision-making, and subsequent advanced study in the pharmacological sciences.
